IMPORTANT UPDATE ON THE TOUR’S START TIME
From Tim: “Due to popular request I am moving the start time for the tour by one-half hour to 12:30pm to accommodate a stop at The Pie Shoppe in Laughlintown, right along US-30. I caught some flak for not stopping there on last year’s Spring Stampede, so when it was brought up again, I wanted to be sure to include it.”
***************
Tim the Tour Man is organizing a Summer Tour and Night at the Races on Saturday, August 23, 2014. This will be the day after Mustang Night at the Starlite Car Cruise in Wexford, so everyone’s pony should be shined up and ready to go! The tour will meet at the Murrysview Shoppes shopping center, 5030 William Penn Highway, Monroeville, PA. For further reference, businesses located here include Pool City, Dollar General, Fashion Bug, and the Bella Luna Trattoria. The Summer Tour will leave at 1pm and travel first to the Flight 93 Memorial in Stoystown, then to the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site. That will be followed by dinner at Coal Miners Cafe in Jennerstown, then a quick 2 minute ride to the Speedway.
NOTE: It is permissible to do only the day tour or only the Night at the Speedway if that’s what the members want to do. Please indicate at sign-up that you are participating for only part of the day and which part of the day. I understand that everyone isn’t a race fan and may not want to go to the speedway or may have other commitments.
Tour Schedule:
12:30 pm – leave Murrysview Shoppes. The route will be a simple one–US-22 to PA-981 in New Alexandria to US-30 in Latrobe.
2:30pm – arrive at Flight 93 Memorial. There is a special interpretive program at the Memorial from 3-3:30pm. At the conclusion of the program, we will depart the Memorial.
3:30pm – depart Flight 93 Memorial. The route will be US-30 west to US-219 south to PA-601, then north on PA-601 then PA-985.
4pm – arrive at Quecreek Mine Rescue Site. This is at the private residence and farm where the rescue occurred. There is an admission fee of $6.00 for the site.
4:45pm – depart Quecreek Mine Rescue Site. North on PA-985 to Jennerstown. Coal Miners Cafe is on the northeast corner of PA-985 and US-30. Here’s a link to the cafe’s menu. http://www.ourcoalminerscafe.com/Dinner.html We have been offered a discount at the cafe!
5:55pm – depart Coal Miners Cafe for the 1/2 mile drive to Jennerstown Speedway. We will have a reserved parking area at the speedway. Admission at the track will be half-price ($5.00). Practice is from 6 to 6:45 with opening ceremonies at 6:55pm and racing at 7pm. After the heat races, GPMC members will be able to drive onto the track for a parade lap, then park in the infield. At that point, we will have a brief tour of the pits then return to the grandstands to watch the evening’s feature racing. At the conclusion of the feature races, we will again cross the track and get to run some fast laps.
The trip home…everyone is on their own. You can follow US-30 back over Laurel Mountain and into Latrobe, then Greensburg, then Irwin. Or you can take PA-985 south to Somerset and take the turnpike back. It seems to work out to about the same time either way.
Please email Tim Baker at racertim@comcast.net to reserve your spot on the tour or to ask any questions.
